visitor generated content - does this work?

    Hi All,

Im thinking of creating a website where people can post their favourite recipes online.
But Im wondering if people will bother putting the information into the system.

Would such a concept be likely to work? How do other sites motivate visitors to upload content?

    Any feedback would be great.

    Thanks,

    Tubs

it would but you have to make great advertising for people to notice because there are many websites that are already carrying enough recipes so you might want to try good advertising ...

I've done a lot of research into this business model, and I believe it is a better model than a content-only website. People want interactivity in websites. And only a handful of websites are delivering that interactivity.

A content based site really needs to have an element of involvement to stand out these days. If you can create an active community, you may be able to get to the level of traffic you need to make enough money to make the site worthwhile.

You will have to seed it yourself and build it up to a certain level before people will take over for you. I hope you have a ton of good recipes to get the thing going -- especially if you plan to have a lot of categories. Also, you may have to do a certain level of moderating, especially if you allow hyperlinks at all in your website. Those can hurt you in Google if left unchecked.

I've just launched a very similar website (http://www.marketing-training-center.com) which is a collection of over 450 marketing ideas categorized into 22 types of marketing. The site is based on people sharing their marketing ideas with others. It has idea submission forms all over the site to encourage user submissions. The site has been up for about a month now, and people are already starting to submit unique marketing ideas.

The downside to this model is a lot of work upfront, and a potentially long period of time before it makes any significant money. So be ready for a tough haul getting going.

    Good luck with your venture
