Virtual Server Maintenance question

Hello, I currently use dailyrazor on a shared server. I am looking to upgrade to a virtual dedicated server http://www.dailyrazor.com/vps/vds_plans.php
My question is, it says "By self-managed, you are responsible for the virtual servers administration and maintenance." What exactly would I be responsible for with self management? I want to make sure I can understand and complete everything I would need to do. I don't require anything special, I am just looking for the upgraded bandwidth and space. Thank you.

Do you know how to use a server using SSH and how to install things on it?
If not, you won't be able to handle the server.
I suggest getting a third party management company to do it for you.

What third party companies would you suggest? I know the basics of ssh a server, but probably not enough if it is alot of maintenance. That is mainly why I am asking. I do not want to spend alot of time or messing up the server, as I want to spend my time working on my site. Should I just wait until I can afford a dedicated server? Thank you.

I don't know much about scripting but I know enough to change and install files on VPS. You should look into one with a GUI interface like Plesk. I know that Ipower or Startlogic (same company by the way) would have VPS available.

I would just have Cpanel/WHM and have Cpanel manage it for you whenever you have a problem. Whoever has root....gets free help from Cpanel. I manage my own servers but I have Cpanel fix it whenever the problem is major. Cpanel in my opinion is the best and the other control panels can't compare to it.

Try to do it yourself and pay some people on a per situation basis. I don't have a company manage myne and I knew nothing about SSH managment site of a server and I'm doing fine.
