    Hey,
I am planing to buy a virtual dedicated server from godaddy (Preconfigured Economy Plan) anybody tried it before? is it good enough for a 250 000+ posts community?

And what is the best to use with virtual dedicated server, Red Hat Fedora Core 4 or CentOS4?

    Thanks in advance!

centos is better than fc4, i never tried any vps.sql size + users online at the same time are important for performance

CentOS is derived from Red Hat Enterprise server. If I were you I would just flip a coin. Any website and its PHP, Ruby, Perl scripts will run equally well on either Linux distribution. I personally use Fedora Core and CentOS. I cannot discern any difference in performance, functionality, ease of use, and/or available tools.

The more important question is whether or not a VPS will suit your needs. You must always bear in mind that a VPS is on a shared machine with other VPSes. It is a step above shared hosting because you buy minimum computing resources, but it is not equal to a dedicated machine. As is the case with shared hosting, if there in someone on the machine with an unusually intense website, it will affect other users.

You would expect to pay USD$90 to $110 per month for a dedicated machine and you should be paying under $50 for "just any" VPS.

I have not tried a lot of VPS providers. I would want to talk to them about my prospective needs and their policies and their base machines. In some cases, you will be paying $50 to $90 per month for a VPS and getting something that feels like a dedicated machine. In other cases, you will be spending sub $50 and getting full control of your VPS, but feel like you are on shared hosting.

I have a shared hosting at the moment, and it is driving me crazy because of the lack of options and performance.
I am aware of the difference between VPS and dedicated machine, but I want to give it a try and see how it goes, so dedicated machine will be my other option.

    Thanks alot for all you.
