It's not really something you can 'implement'.
At the heart of viral marketing is a catchy idea - you need a 'something' that can go viral - a video, a widget, a game - something that once you start seeding it on youtube etc, catches on and gets passed on by people finding it funny/useful/outrageous.

The clue is in the 'viral' description - it's something that when somone has seen it, they want to pass it onto their friends.
Recent virals - include rickrolling, and the Facebook campaign to get RATM to no.1 in the charts. As far as pure advertising goes, I'd say the Saatchi ad for tmobile at Liverpool st station (my references are a bit UK biased!) got passed around a lot.

Viral Marketing is pretty much the old word of mouth marketing technique. It is creating buzz or newsworthy events, tweets, videos, ebooks, or blogs to attract attention. Buzz is the key ingredient that makes Viral Marketing work! It uses social networks to increase awareness i.e. Blair Witch project. Use multiple online venues to increase the chance that what you are promoting becomes viral in nature i.e. Twitter and Myspace.

Viral marketing is something that people do the marketing for you.

For example lets say you build an online tool that can predict how much a stock value would be in 15 minutes from the current time; and you let people use the tool on their website(there would be a link back to your website, when they set it on their website).

Now if the tool is useful word would spread, lot of people would start using the tool on their website. As a result you get lot of backlink and popularity.

Thats a basic example of viral marketing. It is very difficult to get a viral concept working, unless you have a unique and useful idea.

Just think of Billy Mayes commercials. That is viral marketing at its best!
