I hear a lot about Vile Silencer and am considering some paid advertising there for my directories. can someone give me feedback? People say its THE place to promote directories, but for example, their forum is almost bare of members which makes me wonder just how well spent my money will be... Thanks in advance. Oh, and if can specify better places for directory promo, please do tell.
The forum part was added maybe 6 months ago, but I would agree it is the most popular place for finding an up to date directory list.
Vilesilencer is one of the best places to find an up-to-date list of free, general, seo-friendly directories. So you will have more success if your directories fit any of those categories, because that's what visitors are looking for from there. Yes, there are niche categories, but they get considerably less attention. The other point to mention is that the Vilesilencer lists are widely copied around the web, which is why getting on the list can give a directory a big boost. But unfortunately for you, the advertising isn't likely to get copied along with the directory lists.
If your directories offer free, no-reciprocals required - then getting listed on vilesilencer is one of the best ways to advertise your directories. I do believe paid directories are being included on the list now (because everything in this world has a price).
Actually no it is included in a different list. The free brings a lot more traffic and submissions and things.
That's the best reason for trying to get on to the vilesilencer list. Worked wonders for my directory. Dan
I believe the paid directories have to pay to be included on that list. Therefore it's a good way of finding some paid directories that actually have an advertising budget.
IT cost 50$ to get on the list. Most free directories dont use a penny for advertising and have no PR. So your site really has no need to be there.
People say its THE place to promote directories, but for example, their forum is almost bare of members which makes me wonder just how well spent my money will be... As an advertiser on the Vilesilencer group of websites I can say that there is no real justification for your concerns. Threadbare (excuse the pun) participation, even if that was a shared view, is no real indication of how well a site is supported and utilised by its visitors. My own sites, iServ and Vintage Radio, also have little in the way of participation, both on the main site and grouped forums but this doesn't relate to the amount of traffic the sites receive, or the click-throughs on advertising in any way. I've had a couple of discussions in past years about why some forums are busier than others and the points of view, whilst being varied to a degree, universally point back to a few common ideas, such as what the forums offer the individual member, aside from the ability to post. I've owned forums for 5+ years and I always get requests for things like signatures, member profile pages, post count logging, etc but whilst some of these features already exist, I am reluctant to offer them to the membership simply because they want it. Hence, some will walk away and not participate because I have removed their opportunity to openly advertise their own sites, for example. The Vilesilencer forums are similar to mine in some respects, one being the lack of useless, un-informative and flame-bait posts. Most of the discussions there are intelligent and contain worthwhile answers to many commonly discussed issues. To my way of thinking, this would be the primary purpose of a discussion forum. It's just a matter of weighing up quantity against quality and each person needs to make up their mind as to what they really want to see. The other point to mention is that the Vilesilencer lists are widely copied around the web, which is why getting on the list can give a directory a big boost. I've noticed this too. It's amusing to see people ripping Dan's efforts and also the efforts of others though the impact that ripping can have on people who genuinely want to build a community can have serious impacts on their business activities. This doesn't mean that people should be afraid of a bit of competition however I fail to see the need for two identical forums. Each online community should be set up only with the purpose of providing something extra or something better, not just the same thing in the hope of milking a userbase. As an example, at one time I set up a forum for the TV show Big Brother. I did it only because the official forums and chat service are notorious for collapsing under heavy load and the people responsible for the official site have never bothered to install stronger servers and connections. My forum, whilst having fewer users has never crashed - so there is a perception, at least, of an improved product. It's also an entry point to forums relating to other services and websites I provide and operate. IT cost $50 to get on the list. Most free directories dont use a penny for advertising and have no PR. So your site really has no need to be there. Anyone on the paid directory list have any feedback? Getting any action from there? I get traffic from my ad there, no question. Of course there will also be traffic you can't identify. Many people, especially the more savvy ones, have privacy software which prevents your site logging from identifying a referrer URL so there is no way the doubt can be eliminated one way or another. Traffic levels can and will also depend on what interest people have in what subject matter your website covers. Lastly, one thing that some people are forgetting: Pagerank has no bearing on traffic levels. One of my sites is PR 4 and gets twice the traffic of a physically larger website with more inbound links and PR 5. Quality and word-of-mouth will beat PR any day of the week. Vilesilencer == quality.
Free list brings submission and traffic. And you make your post to long, I chose a few paragraphs to read
