Video sharing CMS or Drupal?

I have a dilemma: what video sharing CMS do I must choose ? Which is best? I also have the option to use Drupal but maybe these specialised CMS are better. I also want a free video sharing CMS. I saw PHPmotion is so, is it good enough?

I'm using phpdirector on one of my sites which is free and "vshare" on another which is like $10 but works really well.

So this Video share CMS let you customize your site's blocks, video player and themes? Are the themes good and plenty? I was thinking to use Drupal but I realized that maybe other CMS can work better with videos... Only when I looked at some sites made with them I realised that they somehow perform better. And their video player was so cool!!

So you're looking for a site to actually host the videos as well, right?

I've used Drupal quite a bit and customizing the layout can be a big pain, if that's important to you.

It's not difficult to theming Drupal template if you know how to use Drupal. As mentioned in several threads before Drupal is not for novice and it takes times to learn

We sell themes bundled with Vidiscript. They are not free but are very affordable. If you are interested you can test them out with a live demo @ VidiThemes.com

Drupal will require a lot of development work if started from scratch. It is a lot easier to start with Video CMS.

Drupal all the way! CMS is better in news sharing, still you can try WP if you want to share news with a video.

I've purposely limited my discussion to self-hosted, open source (as in non-encrypted) solutions where you can customize the platform as you like. Most of the "canned" scripts (i.e., PHPMotion, Vidscript, Vshare, etc.) are encrypted to some extent and I do not typically recommend these solutions.

When recommending a solution, the project needs and the skill level of the webmaster or site administrator are the most important considerations. Drupal is powerful, but it is NOT for the beginner or anyone who does not have the patience or technical experience to truly use Drupal to its potential. Even Drupal power users will tell you as much. ;) Once you add audio and video requirements into the mix, things get even more complex, which is why a webmaster generally should choose a platform that aligns well with his or her skill and comfort level.

WordPress and Joomla are truly options that the "average" person would be more likely to utilize more quickly if not easily. Joomla is stronger in terms of centralized user management and the "shared" user environment. Yes, Joomla's APL leaves a LOT to be desired, but the core functionality is there, and its shortcomings can be overcome with carefully chosen extensions. WordPress, according to many, is far easier to setup but it still very much behaves like a blog with respect to user functions (though CMS functionality can be emulated via plugins, and "classic" CMS capabilities are probably on the horizon). WordPress is merging with WordPress Multiuser, and its CMS capabilities are continually in development. There are several sites that document how WP can truly behave like a CMS with a little work.

Both WordPress and Joomla have third-party add-ons that provide video functionality. For WordPress, you can research its plugins at the main WordPress site. WordPress also has Kaltura All-in-One Video Pack, which is now self-hosted (it wasn't earlier). You can read about that option here:
    http://www.enterprisemastermind.com/review-kaltura-interactive-video-player-for-wordpress/

And Kaltura is FREE and open source.

There are also several other multimedia plugin options for WordPress, so please do research to find the one that you may like best.

Regarding Joomla, there are really two (2) primary options here - Seyret and HWDVideoShare - that provide the ability to host your own videos as well as include plugins to pull from additional sources (i.e., YouTube, Revver, DailyMotion, etc.). Neither of these are free, but the prices are reasonable (at or under $40 USD each). Of the two, I'd more strongly recommend HWDVideoShare. The code is cleaner, the development team active both on the project and the forums, and the extension is surprisingly well documented. The extension itself isn't fancy, but it has quite a bit of functionality, and the code is clean so it is not that hard to customize. I've taken an earlier version of this extension and modified it to serve up MP3 and H264 MP4 files, and overall am happy with it.

To be fair, Drupal also has the Kaltura option, so, if you're game to play with Drupal, this may well be a very good option for you to consider. You can read about the official package at http://drupal.kaltura.org/

You can read up on Kaltura itself at http://www.kaltura.org.

Clipbucket and vShare are pretty good scripts. Although installation can be troublesome on a shared hosting environment. You will need to talk nice to your host to get some php functions enabled like exec() and shell_exec()
