I am considering making a gaming niche site, but should I create one based around one or two specific genres of games, a specific system, or just videogames in general?
You can make genaral site but i would make some pages specific so you can try to get them ranked well.
Like, a gaming site, and then have areas of the site specific to each genre. Like a place for shooters, sports etc?
An all-out gaming site would be harder to get traffic to, and there's a lot more competition. Focusing on one specific genre or game would be a lot easier. I can say that from experience!
go for the whole package. all games, and maybe use subdomains rpd.name.com fps.name.com rts.name.com and stuff and try optimizing each subdomain for google. that will bring maximum proffit from your website in my opinion.
