Video Editor/Playback advice...

I used to have this great software that came included with my Windows PC. I believe it was not a free software (but came bundled). It consisted of 2 programmes, a video editor and a DVD player. Then a friend wiped it from my PC and it is lost. And I cannot remember what it was called :-(

The great thing about this software is that it could read almost any file. e.g. I would often import home made dvd files of rare video footage and it would read them like a charm. Now the other softwares that I have used cannot read these kind of files - saying they are not compatible formats.

Can anyone point me to the software I am remembering, or to another software that can read all sorts of difficult files (to edit them)?

It's (mostly likely) not what you're talking about, but have you tried VLC?

It's really ugly, but plays nearly everything.

Hi, thanks, yeah I have that. Great for playback. But I want the software mainly for editing.
