Hiya, Being a total newbie please forgive any naive comments but my site has just gone live.. www.soundology.com It is a media content heavy site (about 700mb in total) and written in flash and coldfusion. The problem is that several users have experienced glitching and sticking of video and audio media files from users who are using fast PCs (2.8 - 3.4 GHz PCs) with fast broadband (8mb) connections. Also the box movements across the screen are slow and jittery on a few pcs. I have been advised that it is the hosting server and/ or access of the files. Could it be the coding not being efficient enough ? I know these things are determined by pc power and broadband speed but other media rich sites are working fine - it's just our site and on a fast pc this shouldn't be happening. Of course - the majority of fast pcs are running the site very well - it's just a minority on which it's happening. Any solutions very welcome ! We're pulling our hair out here! thanks Nuimuso
It could be a number of things. First, I'm going to need a bit of information. Is this a dedicated server, or shared server? Operating system/Kernel Filesystem software How are the videos encoded? From what media to flash and how Web server This is what I can think off the top of my head that can effect performance on your end. Also, where are these users located, and where is your server located? Who are the bandwidth providers?
Okay - the hosting is by www.cfmxhosting.com The plan is the starter plan - 10gb bandwidth a month disk space is 1500mb but website is about 700mb though total disc usage is about 1300mb at the moment. Site written in Flash 8 and coldfusion 8. 1 It is a shared server but apparently there are only about 3 websites on the whole server - it has very low usage. 2. The videos are encoded from QT Movs (DV PAL) into FLV files using sorenson squeeze (latest version). Average file size is between about 7mb Generally all files are between 3mb-15mb each in size. 3. There are 69 flv files (total 453mb) and 277 music mp3 files (total 236mb) 4. The users are located mainly in London 5. The server is in London, Docklands (near the centre) I don't know what the filesystem software is or the operating system of the hosting site. (but I can get it) The flv clips play fine standalone and buffer well and playback when the mouse is not over any of the boxes. The box movements seem to be causing immense CPU overload... and when a clip is playing, if the mouse is resting over a box, the playback starts to jitter. When an item is selected, the boxes move across the screen and jitter across very slowly. any thoughts are welcome ! thx Nuimuso
I highly doubt there are only 3 websites on the whole server, if someone told you that, than they're wrong. It's really hard to pinpoint the bottle neck on a shared host, as you don't have root access to the server. If you can give me the link, I can test the network connection.
that's what I thought! But they are adamant about it :-( where do I get the 'link' from ? remember - I'm a lay person - not a techie ! thx
