Hey My website (www.space-clothing.co.uk) specialises in mens urban clothing. never have i appeared in the SERPS under the search "urban clothing", when last night my signature links all got counted and bang! right onto page 1 at fourth place! today however, it dropped back right to middle of page 4. then tonight it went back up to page 1 - 4th place. 30 mins later it's completely disappeared from the SERPS :S what the hell is going on? anybody experienced this behaviour before? thanks Matt
How old is the site? Have you recently updated it? When I see stuff like this happen on my sites it usually returns back after a few weeks. As long as there are lots of good solid backlinks in place and all whitehat there should be no worries!
Yes, all the time. You are hitting different data centers when you check. The data centers are out of sync. Most likely, one of those 3 sets of SERPs will stick but it may be a few days before you see any consistency. /*tom*/
Googles dancing people are reporting backlink updates and PR drops all over the place so i would imagine google are playing again
thanks for the replies. the domain is a good few years old but only been pushing it since january. had PR3 for ages now and i'm anticipating an extra point on there as i've built over 600 backlinks in this time. i update the site at least 3 times a week and it's well optimized for SEO hope it sticks at number four on page one - dream come true!!
I have seen fluctuation on some keywords I track daily. One of them I want to rank page 1 BAD for has been bouncing between #3 and 40-50 (page 4). I also for at least the last 3 weeks have seen another keyword bounce all over page one from as high as #2 to as low as #9 but it is different every hour. Also - this is across multiple DC's, not just the one i happen to be on.
Things like these happen all the time. I'm not sure if it's Google dance or something else but you will have to live with it. The SERPs are fluctuating a lot lately.
well i've been closely monitoring SERPS and keywords on a number of sites for quite some time and not noticed such fluctuation! a friend of my mentioned that this sort of thing happened a day or two before the last PR update...
Hi guys, I was just about to start a new thread when i saw this one. My site has been jumping up and down like a yoyo. From first position to fifth, back to first again. Haven't seen anything like this before. I think its best to just wait it out for a little while as any major changes to your website could be disastrous. Cheers.
yea it got me thinking - how the fate of my business is at the mercy of where my site appears in the SERPS... i hope i don't drop, it could potentially mean i won't be able to eat for the next couple of weeks!!
This is called the google dance, you should continue building backlinks to secure a prominent position.
I track about 70 keywords daily. Large fluctuations are not at all unusual. I've seen a competitive keyword of mine get as high as the top half of Google's first page, then drop completely out of sight for a few weeks, and then come back to about #14 (today). Nothing at all unusual here. It happens to lots of keywords lots of the time.
There doesn't seem to be much talk on here about it so I will mention it. The Dewey Update is shaking things up, and very notably in the UK. On my sites that are affected in the US, they bounce in and out of the serps, which is typical of a new site but the competitors do too. Local searches for our area in FL pulls up links to Oregon and such. Crazy results. Many change by the minute or hour. For a week or more, you could check in the morning and get completely different results than you would get at noon or in the evening. Wildly different. Here is a link to a discussion about Dewey. Edited to add: Matt Cutts came up with the codeword Dewey in post #:3616809
