If two similar sites with exact same search keywords, for example, site A and site B both sell Nike Shoes, their target keyword is Nike Shoes. If I search "Nike Shoes" in google and Site A is on the first page and Site B is on 6th page. What makes Site A higher than site B . Is it because more people/visitor click on site A or is there another reason why site A is higher up top? This is assuming both have very similar pages, both targeting the same keywords and both have same SEO implemented. Sorry if there is an answer somewhere, I just can't find it.
Simple, and common, question, but the answers are made up of many, many components. Quality of backlinks and age of site being two very important ones, and oftentimes, they go hand in hand. How much older is Site A compared to Site B? The two sites may be the same, but if Site A is older and more established in the niche, and Site B is a newcomer, the answer is obvious. Google very much values age.
As the guys above say, it depends on a range of factors like, 1. The age of the site 2. The on page optimisation 3. The number and quality of the inbound links 4. Any penalties that a site may suffer (sandbox or penalised for black-hat methods)
1. Age of the site - The older the better (For new websites it is possible to get high ranking for the first 2-3 weeks but, it is just a temporary ranking and it will be sandboxed probaly in a months time. Usually the older sites are ranked well in search engines especially in Google. 2. Number of inbound links and the quality of such links 3. Content (Unique content free from duplicate). Also it absolutely vital to update the content of the site atleast in every 2-3 days. The more the better! For the sites that updates their content regular has a big advantage over the site that do not update their content. 4. On page optimization - use of keywords, meta tags, etc
Also, if you've a dynamic website, then make sure you implement Mod_rewrite on your pages so that your pages are SE Friendly. A sitemap for your website is also not a bad idea.
dont forget about the toolbar, which google has spread and can use to track how much time people spend on some site, to get more accurate traffic info, etc
