I have a bunch of old coins and wanted to find out their value, does anyone here know of sites, forums, etc, for gathering information. If there’re any coin collectors could you give me some tips?

I was recently told the silver in old silver dimes (meaning dimes would have to predate the 64ish era) have 85 cents worth of silver in them.

Sorry I do not know reputable site to suggest.

valuing old coins is hard sometimes because a lot of it is based on the quality of the coin - is it all scratched up, totally new, etc

Unless the quarter or dime dates to before 1964 (when they were silver instead of zinc like they are now), its pretty much worth face value. If the penny has a leaf on the back (instead of the memorial), then its worth a little more. If a nickel has a buffalo on it, its worth a little more.

If you have a list of whatcha got, I'd be happy to take a look at it.

My grandmother gave me a small coffin full of coins and I’m going to sort them out now. The coins are from Portugal, Mozambique, South Africa and other African Countries. Some of the coins are 100 years old.

100 years is not really old for coins.

I have coins that are 250+ years old and hand made. I dont think I can get more than a few dollars for them.

Coins are usually valued on how rare they are and not on how old they are. I dont think you should expect a windfall from your coins; unless they are made of gold.

Really? Mayby because things are generally cheaper in india. I've heard that some people imported drums from India and sold them here for 50 times the value.

It's not just about India, it's the same everywhere.

Value is based on rarity and not much on age.

Look at the ebay listings and you will get an idea - some thousand year old coins are available for $5.

She told me that some of the coins were very rare but she never bothered to look up their value. I think the best option would be to maybe buy some book about coins.
In the collection I found some coins from Mexico, India and Argentine.

Rarity is the keyword for coins. Ofcourse gold and silver are better because of the metal, but they more rare then other.

This one is a Roman Coin found by me in France. And i guess only a few years AD. But i think he is only around 50$, if i could find somebody. I wish the value was based on age ;)

The eBay suggestion mentioned above will give you real time prices and there are good pictures to gauge yours by, if you find the same coin.
Coin books are static and prices will vary from book to book and values can change on a daily basis.
Many coin dealers are notorious under appraisers, hoping to get you to sell to them far below market value so finding one you can trust.... good luck.

Since they are more or less heirloom from your grandmother, are you really looking to sell them or just valuate them.

You could contact your insurance agent for a suggestion on appraisal. This might get you some reliable results.

    Peace,

I went to the local book store and bought a book that has a list of prices for every Portuguese coin and discovered that I have some that are worth 100 euros each :D “I have 10 of them”. If I become a millionaire I’ll warn you guys.

my parents had a bunch of the late 1800 silver dollars and had to sell them in the 80's to get money to move or something. They were worth quite a bit more than $1 each back then.
