    Hi all,

This morning the ip address linked to our online forum with over 50k members was hit by large scale and very intensive DDoS attack.
Our website is hosted on a virtual private server. This attack brought the whole network down until my host traced the target IP and nullrouted it on uplink network equipment.

Is there anyway to determine who and why the person initiated the attack against our system? Is there a way out to prevent such attacks in the future?

What are the penalties and fine involved for "intentionally causing damage to a protected computer? What are the legal options available if we are able to find the culprit?

    Thank you!
