ok, first: I use the email I got the message to ONLY for digitalpoint, never give it out (as it has a "code" in it), today I got advertising from benchmarkemail.com - is this authorized from the DigitalPoint Team or not please? I need a clarification please, thanks.

Sounds like spam to me... has nothing to do with us though.

it certainly is, but how did they get the email address? was it a hacker attack like on dnforum.com? don't get me wrong, but I just wanted to know, how they got this special email address of mine, you can see it in my profile admin, it's special "designed" for the digitalpoint account and just you should be able to know it (and I know it of course)... but maybe mods can see it too? that's what my problem is, I can't see any chance that this can reach a third party without a security problem :( mods selling emails? would this be possible? just asking, I'm not a big spam-hater on email addresses I make public, BUT the ones that shall remain private are a different thing.

Well, assuming you never told anyone your email address, never posted it anywhere and you are sure it came in on that address, there are a couple seemingly unlikely scenarios that I can think of...

    • If your profile wasn't always setup to not allow users to email you, someone could have seen it at some point
    • Some how your mail server was compromised (for example if it's a server that also hosts web sites, it wouldn't be too difficult for someone who has a site on there to read the mail logs which would expose the address)
    • Have you ever emailed anyone from that address?

I have got solution and I hope that helps:
let's say that you have domain like xxx.com, so when you always join new forum, mailing list, or any application that needs an email just use this technique:
1- create new email acount related to the forum you want to join like .
2- make forward from this email to your main account.
3- repeat this as much as you join.

This is just technique to who needs to know from where you got spam :)

    thanks

thanks, I never mail from this address (it's just a forward), so it could be the mail server, but the other guy told the same.... so is it maybe your database? that's what I'm worried about... I'm sure you can understand, I guess I'll block this email address and change the one used here, good idea? ;) hopefully this will stop the spam, BUT you should anyway try to have a look, if there's a leak on your side maybe, if it happens with the new address too, it's the only explanation then, hope not... but dnforum.com was hacked, so could you I guess :( :( :(

Anything is *possible*, but the servers on this end are pretty tightly locked down... All DB servers are assigned only non-routable IP addresses (you can't get to them from the outside world), so you would need to physically be on their local network. And even then you would need to physically be on 1 of 2 machines... 1 of which is my personal laptop, the other is a machine that will only let you use it if your thumb happens to have the same thumb print as me.

Not only that, all servers (including DB servers) are not shared machines (only 1 user account on the servers, which is mine).

So while anything is possible I suppose, I would be willing to bet a *very* large sum of money that the servers on this end were not hacked.

My technique is similar but instead of sending to the main account, I forward all to gmail, where spam is mostly filtered with no pain
