Very Basic Question on Links

Hey everyone. I am just getting my feet wet with this and I have a very 'noobish' question. When people talk about getting links from high ranking sites, how do they do this? Do they just post a message in the comments and then that counts as a link from that site? Does having a link like in your signature on a forum help? I don't understand what constitutes getting a link on a site.

Your link won't mean much if you put it on a site that doesn't have DO Follow tags, and quite often it's worth less if it's promotional. all the same, it's a link that others may well see when visiting the page where you place it.

    Thanks for the replies.

Wouldn't any link on a website be promotional though? When you're link building is it more to just have those links on hihg PR sites so google sees the backlinks, or is it more so people can click on the link? Like which is more important? I'm familiar with the Do-follow websites.

Also I don't understand about proxies... I mean I know what they are, do people use them with building links? When do they use them?

Sorry for all the questions, but this awesome and I'm trying to find everything I can on the subject.

    Hey,

For your first question, the main goal is just to have the link not necessarily to get people to click it (although that's always nice!). The idea is the more links you build, assuming your onsite SEO is done properly, the higher you'll rank in Google for your desired search term. So really they don't need to be in a visible spot or to get people to click them, Google has a bot called a "spider" that "crawls" through pages and follows links, this is what you're trying to do just get the spider to index/count your backlink.

You'll know if/when you need proxies! Most of the time its for automation or other heavy spamming (as an example WordPress has a global anti spam so if you post too many comments your IP will be blocked from all WordPress blogs for 24 hours from leaving a comment, using a proxy would get you around this).

Awesome! Thanks IMService. That clears a lot of questions I had up. So even if my link is just in the username of my comment that's enough? And that makes sense about how the spiders work. Same with proxies.

    Thanks again!
