Vector Images Help Needed

    Hey there,

Okay, all this time I thought that photoshop (.psd) was a vector format. Unfortunatley that's not the case.

I have a client who needs a vector image of the logo. Now while I'm not a newb in PS I don't know what to do.

So can someone tell me how I would go about creating a vector image from a PSD or JPG file?

I need this ASAP and your help will be greatly appreciated.

For Vector images you have to create your logos in vector based software. I suggest Adobe Illustrator. Import your jpeg formated logo in to Illustrator and trace the logo by using Illustrator tools. Even you can create vector based logos in Flash MX also.

You can do it in photoshop. You have to trace the image with the pen tool and then fill the appropriate parts., but transforming any text might be a bit more complicated. I would suggest downloading the trial version of adobe illustrator then trace everything with the pen tool and convert the text to path.

Show me the logo, if it is not too complicated, I will put it to vector for you. I've done such things before. However, if the logo is complicated and would take too much time, I wouldn't be able to do it for free ><!!! :p

The easiest and fastest way to do this is using the new Live Trace Feature in Illistrator CS2. here is a guide

    http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2005/06/02/tracing-in-illustrator-cs2/

You do have to spend some time getting familiar with the output settings, but once mastered you can easily turn jpg bmp logos into EPS vectors.

PS: a higher resolution JPG means a better the output of the Vector.

I don't know if this works, but I tried this.

    1) Save PSD as TIF or TIFF (that's a vector file type) with layers in-tact.
    2) Stretch image.
    3) Final result is smooth clean edges with no pixelated or blurred garbage.

This worked for me. But is it correct?

It might work if the picture does not need to be resized... you will loose quality if you try and resize this file.

.tif is not a vector format.
As explained above, the logo will have to be recreated in an actual vector program such as illustrator and saved as an .eps file. Even if you just resave the file from photoshop as an .eps file, that doesn't make it a vector file, it is still a pixel or bitmap file.

Logos are generally done as vector art because that allows them to be scaled to any size with no loss of clarity or sharpness.

TIFF is not a vector format.

Send me the JPG and I will vectorise it if its simple.

If complicated I want some money :p

You can also do this with the pen tool using Fireworks or Flash. Then export as eps, or swf using flash. Both are vector formats, if you start with a vector image. Not the prettiest option but if you have those programs and no others, it will have to do.

Just save it as a EPS file in Photoshop, and as for the text, you can either trace it, or if the client doesn't have a problem, just simply give them the text type file. Colors should remain in the same mode, if you want the logo to be used for printing purposes, use CMYK mode at 300 DPI.
