Vector character - need feedback

I created this character from scratch using shapes in Photoshop and wanted to make a full wallpaper featuring him. This is for a college portfolio so any tips on improving him (I'm mainly looking at the shoes) would be appreciated.

I know the background is obviously going to be worked on, but I've hit a road block and can't seem to come up with something decent. Anyone have any pointers on what I can add? I'd prefer something vector-like to match his 'cartoon-y' look.

(I have the image watermarked because I don't want him to be used elsewhere)

I just don't want to keep a black/grey background there because it's too plain. It's just hard to find really good vector tutorials for Photoshop.
