vBulletin worth it?

Currently I have PhpBB. I thinking of purchasing vBulletin for $160.

My main reason for upgrading to vBulletin is all the big forums I know uses vBulletin. Also PhpBB is a free software so it has that feeling of being insecure--there is no incentive for the makers to have it the best it can be.

    What are your thoughts?

What would be the features that vBulletin has over its competitor InvisionPowerBoard?

I think vbulletin is great, I really love their plugin system and the fact I can receive support when I need it.

One thing I feel though is if you're running a business a paid forum software such as vbulletin or IPB is a must. I think it looks really bad when you're running some software everyone out there from some 12 year olds pokemon forum to a family forum. Vbulletin and IPB are run by businesses so you also running it looks good.

That reminds me, I have a pokemonforum.info domain for sale.

Anyway, vBulletin is worth a lot :)

    Use it.

Depends how much income your making to pay for it. Infact my site activity went down after I 'upgraded' to vb from phpbb. My phpbb board had weeks worth of editing done to it so i presume my members thought they were missing out with vb cos there was less modifications for it.

    vBulletin is definitely the best.
however, SMF is trying to be like them (or atleast a bit) like, adding the warning system as the default smf feature. this is only available for charter members atm (the smf beta 2.0)

Plenty of businesses use other forum software. Plenty of crap forums use VB in addition to more professional ones. So that "reason" for choosing them is pretty weak.

If you like what you're using, stick with it. I'd be more worried about a commercial project going under or being radically changed more than a free one supported by a large community - if someone wants to let it go, others always step up to improve things.

If you don't like what you're using, then try something new, whether that's VB or something else.

Just do what's right for you and your forum depending on its size, your audience, etc.
