vBulletin: specific adsense per forumdisplay, some work some dont

Yeah I gotta real head turner of a problem I just can't seem to crack. I have been reading up and making changes for days now, without luck. Breakdown..

I used my five highest active forums for the adsense.
Coded a mod to use custom Keywords/Description per forumdisplay.
Added one universal code for each, vbphrase to only show it in XX forums

Seems simple enough, I figured each forum meta keywords/description would relate to the adsense thereon it. So my music section would have the music ad's, the lounge would have avatar and ecard ad's, so forth.

The problem is, only one of the sections work! The music section uses the keywords and description to output the right ad's. However the rest of the adsense output Hosting or Bulletin software ads. I have been very detailed in removing all unnecessary vbulletin comments in the meta.

What could be my problem? Please ask if you need additional info. Thanks, great community. I have read allot of keen tips.

Well im no coder myself but there is a interestering post from Princeton on vbulletin.org. Read more about irrelevant ads using vbulletin . He says it may have to do something with the rows that are used in Vbulletin, and the number of characters that is read by the mediapartner bot.

It could be that there are other references to vbulletin on the pages(besides just in the meta). It could also be that the google adsense bot has not revisited your pages since your change.

I too thought the bot may not have taking a boo, however my one forum (music) ad's showed up almost immediately. Where as the rest have yet to days later. Also there is no reference to vbulletin, hosting, or anything to which the forums show ad's for. Take a look for yourself in the source.

    working ads:
    http://www.fnk.ca/board/forumdisplay.php?f=9

    non-working ads:
    http://www.fnk.ca/board/forumdisplay.php?f=8

Excuse my site content, it's populated by a roaring amount of the techno generation of youth. However, they are my click connection as well ;)

On the non working page, the topics posted don't have anything to do with the metatags, so that's not too surprising. If there is a recurring theme in your "The Lounge" section, you should probably change your metas to match. There is minimal text on the page, and some if it is the vbulletin footer, so vbulletin ads aren't too surprising either given that it's difficult to discern what the page topic should be. I'm not seeing any vb ads myself though.

The "Check out these useful links" text is probably a violation of adsense TOS (you can't encourage users to click on ads), and it probably doesn't effect your click through rate anyways, so I would get rid of that.

Looking at DP's adsense sandbox, I still se a bunch of hosting ads. Not sure what could be triggering that. Maybe comments. I don't know. When I look at the page though, I still get the bread and ab's ads.

thanks for the in depth reply, it greatly helped. however im surprised that I have no real hand in directing which ad's I feel will benefit my site (and google) over what my page outputs by users. I can see this would be a downside to the vbulletin/adsense integration. still, is there any angles I can use to direct in the adsense in a more sectional direction.

Well, a few things are possible, and since I haven't done this myself just take this as a suggestion, not a definite solution.

    1) Targetted text - Place some text on your forum index page, preferrably with something with <h1> or <strong> tags so that when the adsense spider gets to your page it can see that there is a definite theme to the page.

    2) Drop or re-word comments - it looks to me like the adsense bot may be reading comment tags. I'm saying this because I see ads for bread recipes, and the only thing on the page source that mentions bread that I can find are your comment tags that say "bread crumb". I would try either getting rid of comments altogether, or phrasing them in a way that surrounds your keywords. Like instead of <!--bread crumb goes here--> change it to say <!-- music and dj tag goes here --> or something like that.

    3) pay to get rid of the vbulletin tag. That's a big bullet to eat for targetted ads. It might not be worth it.

    4) surround the google ad with text relating to your topic. It could be using the comment to categorize your ad because there isn't any text to speak of near by.

    5) maybe feature a couple of music related topics in your lounge area near the top. maybe sticky a few informative posts about music or dj's and make sure they are titled with good keywords. Maybe use a username like "dj-music-man" or something like that to post them.

    6) and here's one I think might be a good one:
Where it says "FNK.CA now, in the title of the box, change it to "DJ, Music, and Music Sponsors", and put in a little text blurb above the adsense that says something like - FNK - your music, dj, and blah blah blah resource is supported by advertisements. You can access our music, dj, and blah blah blah resource without advertisements by becoming a registered user with 200 posts or by paying for a membership.

Obviously this doesn't apply if you don't have those kinds of features, that won't work, but you get the idea. Put in some text right next to the ad that is keyword rich. Worth a shot anyways. You could probably test it by saving the page as html and trying a few edits and bringing it online in a test folder to see what happens. That way you know if it's working right away because it will be a fresh adsense-bot crawl of your new page.

There is alot of 'static' sometimes with vbulletin, and adsense, especially before it has learned about your site theme, will have a harder time returning good relevant results. By static I mean things like alt tags that say 'read last post' and things of that nature. A short thread with few words might not have enough to clearly define the content of the thread.

This might help. Try reading these articles:

    Title and Description Changes

    SEO your vBulletin Forum

Pay close attention to the parts about adding thread specific page titles and descriptions - and the part about <h1> tags. Put your adsense banner below the h1 tags.

Try those parts and let me know if I can help further.

Also remember - use alt tages, especially in your header graphic
