VBulletin my.cnf editing

I just purchased a dedicated server and am running into a problem where my forum is still running slowly. I have a Pentium 4 with 2G of RAM, and have been told that the resources are fine but that I have to edit the my.cnf file in order to get it to run faster. Does anyone here have any experience editing this file or configuring it for VB? I'll gladly pay someone $100 if they can fix this for me. Thanks in advance, and please PM me if you can help.

Tuning your MySQL Server might help yes, if you only run the forum on it you can optimize it for vB.

My problem is I can edit it with Putty, but can't seem to get it to save the changes once I put all the info in. I also don't know how to back-up the original prior to the change, and I know this is something simple that someone may be able to do pretty easily. I'd also like to hear about any other program that may be easier to use, as Putty isn't all that user friendly for someone who's not used to editing files from the command line.

I appreciate your insight, and thank you for whatever help you can give.
