vbulletin fresh install with old database?

Never really done anything like this before? So....here it goes.

In getting ready for the new 3.7 that is coming out, I would like to prepare my forums for the upgrade.

I have a new hosting account and would like to do a fresh install of 3.6.8 on that hosting. No problem, I can do that. Now for the real question.....

I would like to have my existing database on those forums. Now, when I do the fresh install, it's going to ask me for an administrator account. But I will have an existing one in the other database?

Is this as easy as installing the new vb on the new hosting/server and then importing my existing database? I think there will be complications because my old vb has hacks/mods installed that are probably reflected on the database. Also, it uses a custom template that will not be used on the new install.

Any help on this would be appreciated.......Thanks!

I can't see it being a problem. But before you export your existing database, I suggest you change the theme to the default and disallow users (if you already haven't) from using a custom theme. As for the custom database modifications, id probably suggest selecting only default vBulletin tables and fields on export, instead of the entire database.

Thanks guys, I am familiar a little wth impex. Will it allow me to select certain tables to import though? I am assuming that's what it is for. I only used it once before!

No, you don't need ImpEx to do that. It's easy as 1,2,3.

Just copy all the new files, and went it walks you through choose the upgrade, choose your existing version and it should be able to update any new mySQL tables.

I've used PhpBB bun now I think I'll use MyBB.It's very similar to VBulletin and the themes can be modified easy(not like smf's themes)

Yes just overwrite any files, but make a backup of the files and the database just in case something goes wrong during the upgrade.
