VB Database Optimization Needed

I have recently purchased a dedicated server for our messageboard and despite a GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz with 2G of RAM it's still slow when we hit our peak load (500-600 users). Looking at the stats we're using only 1/3 of our resources at that point and I've been told that we need to optimize our database configuration to cause it to run correctly. I'd be willing to pay someone trustworthy $100 to do this, as I've been told it's easy for someone who's done it, but I can't quite seem to figure it out.

Please PM if you can help.

    Thanks again,

    Ian

I've been trying to get the info there, but the problem is while I can get the info to optimize it, I can't quite figure out how to go in and make the changes on the server that they suggest. I've offered to pay one of the advisors there, but I haven't heard back so I'm guessing he's probably busy so I figured someone here may know how to do it.

What were the exact changes they suggested? If you ask specific questions, we can probably help you better.

I need to go in and edit the my.cnf file from the command line, something I'm not having any luck doing. I also need to pull some of the settings so they can look them over, but again it has to be done from the command line which I can't seem to do either. I can login and get root access, but don't know the correct command to pull the information.

Needless to say I'm spinning my wheels and am willing to pay someone to get it taken care of. I'm a design and program guy, it's the technical aspect that's just over my head
