value of keyword in domain- .com/net/org vs .info, biz, etc

I have found that having the keyword in the domain can be very valulable for some of the search engines, and can even put a brand new site on the first page of search engine results. I was wondering if the major tld extensions like .com/net/org carry the most weight in this value, or are .info, and .biz worthwhile of registering too?

As far as I know, I don't think the extension matters that much. What is important are keywords in the domain as you mention. If you can make it brandable with keywords then all the better.

That being said, I do wonder about .org domains though. I setup a site about a year ago and within 6 months it had a page rank of 5 and I had done no marketing on it - links were nada. Do .org's get special treatment as they are perceived as non profit?

Its very difficult to make the domain both brandable and keyword oriented because everything seems to have been taken.

surely its a hard process to find a domain of your choice. Every thing that comes to mind is already taken and mostly it happens that the particular domain is for sale!

    Keyword domains are overrated.

I can take a keywoprd domain any day, with only 1-2 extra links.

And on the long run, you WILL want to change your domain from :

    thebestonlinecomputerstoreinuk.com

    to:

    mybrand.com

I would disagree my kw domains do way better than any of my either or other other domains, with the same amount of marketing and seo

Using keywords in the domain name does have positive effects, as an example when you search for domain registration on Google and Yahoo, the website domain.com appears with the word domain highlighted.

interesting feedback... Clicklab do you have experience registering keyword domains outside of .com/net/org? anybody have experience registering .info, .biz, etc? Curious to see how google (or other SE's) value mykeyword.com vs mykeyword.biz.

As for your question about .org... thats very weird. try checking wayback machine, because maybe your 5 page rank is from the previous owner of the domain.. thats all I can think of

Hi sixpack, I have only used one .info with some moderate success so my experience is pretty minimal but I have read quite a bit about domain extensions not affecting ranking as I had the same concerns as you.

I do have a .biz and a .net in progress and for those I just made sure that whoever had the .com versions was not doing the exact same thing.

But if the site is really important to me and is not an adsense or affiliate site then I always try to get a .com.
