Utilizing multiple sites to increase search engine ranking?

I had an idea that I just wanted to verify would work before I go forward with it.

I was thinking about the importance of backlinks, and how I could accumulate some, when I realized I could easily setup "proxy sites" (as I've named them) that link back to my store (which is what I'm mainly trying to promote). As an example, I'll pretend I'm selling comic books. Obviously, I'd have my store itself, selling comic books ranging from Spiderman to Batman. We'll call this site "comicbookz.com". Now, my idea is to setup "batmancomicz.com", "spidermancomicz.com", etc. These sites wouldn't focus so much on the act of selling, but on providing information through reading material. Throughout the sites, I'd be utilizing any opportunity I could to link back to the store itself, "comicbookz.com".

So, is this a good idea? Is it worthwhile? Setting up and maintaining these "proxy sites" would take quite a bit of time and effort, but if it provides better ranking and internet presence, I think it might be worth the trouble.

Thanks for reading, can't wait to hear what you all think.

Well, I messed up. I should've posted this in the "Search Engine Optimization" forum. I cannot find a way to move the post or delete it myself. If a mod comes across this post, I'd really appreciate a quick move to the SEO forum. I apologize.

That's fine you can use this way but make sure not all these websites will be hosted on same IP address.
