Utilising sub-domains to expand content sites

    Hi There,

I am looking for some thoughts and advice regarding utilising sub-domains. For example if I had the domain www.google.com and I then setup directory.google.com is this a valid proposition worth looking into ? I was thinking of running several blog style niche sites ( not clones ) under one domain name using subdomains. Not hundredas though - no more than 10 sites at the most.

Technically I dont have a problem setting it up - but what implications would this cause especially for search engine optimisation? It is also likely I will host each site on the same ip address unless there is a real benefit to hosting the sites in different centres.

    Thanks

It's valid to do, but you have to keep in mind that each one is going to be treated like a separate domain name or entity - in other words, 10 subdomain websites are not going to contribute to the overall ranking of the root domain.

You can do it but subdomain will be treated as separate website. Your subdomain will not gain any benefits or authority power from main domain ever. However, if anything happened to your main domain, it will not effect on your subdomain either.

I'm not sure of your intent. If you are going to run similar sites on subdomains, it is useless from the SEO point of view and it breaks SE rules.
