I also do not geotarget and 60% of our website traffic is from USA. However, I'm thinking of starting. - Compu
Funny you should start this thread. My main site is running on Joomla and just last night I put together a Geotargeting script for it. I've been monitoring it this morning... I've got the non-US traffic going to Adsense and the US traffic of course going to Yahoo. I'm very interested in what kind of a difference it makes (non-US profit vs. any change in YPN)
Ah, but will Google now see that you have zero clicks from the US and if so, does your quality score drop? If Google thinks the quality of your clicks are less, then will they drop your payout to a new level? Higher chance of fraud? or, does google not care if all the clicks are outside the US?
when I started geotargeting my YPN revenue didn't drop at all but my CPM ads for international traffic earned significant profit.
I was banned for too much international traffic and its irrelevant clicks. Be wise or dont be surprised.
Heh, I read that rhyme and it reminded me of a slogan I was told many years ago, "Be cool, and stay in school." Theres something to these warnings in rhymes, can't believe I still remember it after all these years.
I used a modified version of the script mentioned here. I created YPN and Adsense versions of my ads in seperate include files and then just include the appropriate file based on the results of the geoip country. Just to be safe I show YPN to those IPs that come up with no defined country. The code and database is free and claims to be 97% accurate (the geoip database has a timestamp of 12/4 currently, which makes it recent). They also have a paid database (and a web service) that claims to be 99% accurate. For now I'm not quibbling about the 2%. I simply made a Joomla module that calls the code so it'll automatically display the proper ad. If someone else is using Joomla and wants my version of the code drop me a line. I can cobble together some basic instructions.
I would advise setting up geotargeting asap. With only 60% US, you are in the high risk category for getting terminated. The YPN TOS officially states you can't show YPN to ANY non-US traffic, but in actual practice they do allow a certain, undefined percentage. You also aren't getting paid for most non-US clicks, so adding geotargeting with something like phpads renew will allow you to get paid via adsense for those clicks.
Scary stuff. I am implementing geotargeting on the other sites I have running YPN ads. So far it's a nice piece of added revenue on the site I do have it running.
i havnt heard of anyone getting nailed for international traffic in a long time. still its highly advisable to geotarget since your international clicks are wasted. if you dont mind not getting paid for international clicks, send that traffic my way so i can monetize it. jmo
