Original content is always the best. You can submit content from your blog too, however 1. Many websites don't accept duplicated article, 2. Less SEO values, Regards.
Terrible idea to submit the same post on your site to an article submission site. And "switch[ing] up [your] article a little bit" is almost equally as bad an idea... If you want to submit articles to build backlinks, you should write a totally separate article about the same topic, not 'switch up' a few words here and there. Google has patents on detecting duplicate and near duplicate content for a reason. Submit each article to a different submission site. Google can tell that a piece of content is 93.1739% or 47.1291% or 25.0929% duplicate of another piece of content. Near duplicate content gets devalued as does exact duplicate... They have PhDs there who spend all day thinking of things that you are going to try to manipulate the SERPs and then building processes, algorithms, and patents to deal with it.
You should create original content for submission to article and squidoo. Web Directories only require a description so preferably that should also be unique.
