Using top-ranking page stats for developing other pages?

I have a number of pages which all rank #1 for keywords which are very good for one of my sites. These are of course the ones bringing in the most traffic.

Is it worth my while when I am developing content to look at the keyword density, prominence, etc in Title,META Description,META Keywords,Body, Bolded Text and Image ALT Tags for these top ranked pages and try to duplicate the "numbers" for other pages (for other keywords)?

It seems that targeting content to match numerics is just adding a layer of complexity to an already somewhat time consuming task.

I would love to hear other peoples' opinions on this. For now (and since the start) I have made my pages for visitors and ranking has been nice, but I am looking to really start targeting some content for search engine traffic as well.

Are there "magic numbers" that each engine seems to thrive on?

I expect the key is to keep making content for your users, that way if Google changes its algorithm you won't be stuck with the wrong keyword density trying to change all your pages to figure out whats gone wrong.

Not only that, it won't work either. There is no magic number for keyword density. If KD is used, I'm sure it would be on a relative basis i.e. my page has x% but yours has (x+1)%, not an absolute on (i.e. aim fo 3%).

Even if KD is used, it's only one ingredient in the mixing pot. Don't even look at it :)

So far in all my websites I simply make content for the visitor and though moany pages end up doing quite well I constantly read and see folks who are simply SEO fanatics - building their sites around formulas that include these sorts of metrics.

It was only once I started running some analysis on the pages which DO rank high that I started to wonder if I really ought to be paying more attention to this.

My gut reaction is -as you say- just remain focused on the visitors.

Customer is the first, SEO is the second. If you think you will not miss the visitors by doing this, just do it, because this help you a lot.
