using <!-- --> to place keywords into the source code

I just came across a website (which ranks very well on google) which has placed a lot of keywords and descriptive text into the source code between <!-- --> tags (so that it doesn't actually show up on the page). I've never seen this or heard of this before. does anyone know if this is dodgy SEO or acceptable - and does it even work?

That is not a good idea, the comment will be mostly ignored by search engines.

they are called comment tags. They get very little attention from search engines.

I'd have thought that was classed as a blackhat technique.

But if the search engines ignore code commented out I'd have thought it would be pretty useless.

Commented code to my testing is not ignored and yes it is considered a black hat technique. In time they'll get the hammer while the rest of us play it smart and gain in the long run.
