OK so here is a new contribution in how to remove the background from a picture even if the background was some kind of a thin color similar to the stroke. Lets say in a black and white picture I wanted the black to say, I would do the following:
1- Always go for the magic wand tool.
2- Pick the color you want to keep on the layer.
3- Go for Select and pick: Similar. This way you have all the black selected now.
4- Go for Select and click Inverse. So now you have everything other than the black color you want selected even if there was a yellow or red color you do not see.
5- A simple "Delete" click and now you have the black only on your layer.

To make sure it is 100% pure black now, do the following:
    1- Magic Wand Tool
2- Pick the black then Select Similar
    3- Delete
    4- Upper Menu pick "Layer"
5- Pick New/Layer and press OK.
6- Pick the Paint Bucket Tool on your left, sometimes it would be hidden so look for it behind the Gradient Tool.
7 Pick the black color in the Color section down C:0 M:0 Y:0 B:100
8- Put the bucket on the selection and click. Now you have pure black.
I hope you found my contribution to the Magical Wand Tool effective.
    Best Regards guys
