I hope I am in the right area for this question. I look at very big sites on the web and I see many are broken up into subdomains but keep the same look and I would assume database. My guess is because of a server cluster and this is the way it needs to be done? How do you know when to use a subdomain? I want to build a huge site but I am unsure when to use a subdomain. Can anyone lend some sense to me on this subject?

Say you have a site with lots of content on Banking
If you have a lot of content + sub content, etc on related subject that are big enough to be almost a site by itself.
    Example: Loans.MyBank.net, Bankruptcy.MyBank.net

Also, the subdomains can link to and increase the rankings of the primary domain as as if they were separate sites.
Also, in the case of extremely busy sites, Subdomains can be used for load balancing
    www.MyBank.net, www2.MyBank.net
