Here's something i'm not sure about, can you use pictures on your site/blog that don't come from you? Usually simple pictures you find across the internet..

can you just put the source link at the bottom of it to be safe?

    thnx

About 99.99 percent of pictures you see on the Internet are actually copyrighted. Anything pre-1923 is copyright free, as are U.S. government photos because we already paid for the pix with our taxes. I would read up more on this if I were you and yes, putting the source link at the bottom (especially a clickable link) will help a lot.

If you're looking for free pictures to use legally, check out flickr. There's a bunch of great pictures there that have creative common licenses (all you have to do to use them is insert a credit link under the picture).

Ther are some images out there that have been spread around so much that nobody nows where the original image came from.

Flickr is good, I have asked people there for their permission to use and modify their photo. They might take a few days to respond, but the answer is invariably yes.

Clipart images will depend on where you got them from.

Images from large companies often have their own ToS.

But I think a lot of people are happy with a clickable link somewhere in the relevant post.

Here's a link for site with a list of links for stock photos. Not all of them are free, but most are really cheap...like $1...for real.

    http://www.powstock.com/http://www.powstock.com/

I use this one all the time...they have high resolution photos and they have a wide variety for free:

Best of luck and I hope this helps.

I'd say the easiest thing is to find photos at http://flickr.com/creativecommons/

Just taking a photo without permission from some web page, even if you link to the source, could get you in big trouble, depending on how mean or disgruntled the copyright holder is :)

What about wikipedia images? I use them quite often, but always leave a link back to the article where I found them.

Yes, you can use Wikipedia images.

You can also get free stock photos at http://www.freerangestock.com and use them in your blogs, credit or not.

Flickr has tons of awesome photos that you can use for your blog. It has an advanced search option that lets you search only within Creative Commons-licensed photos and that lets you find photos to use commercially and ones that can be modified: http://www.johntp.com/2007/11/23/use-images-from-flickr-for-your-blog/

'Fair use' applies for the use of copyrighted photos for parody, criticism, commentary, news reporting, educational use

Using copyrighted photos for commercial purposes or in a manner that will cause potential harm to the market of the original work is copyright infringement.

I frequenly buy istock images (the smallest size is only one credit, usually) - but of course nobody would know that just by looking at it. Anyone could just rip images off, how could you tell?

check out this link which has a pic on the header that is from bigfoto.com. All I needed to do is put a link to bigfoto.com on the page saying that the header pic was from there. I was allowed to edit it a little bit but not allowed to rip it up. pretty cool.

I will check out Flickr. I take a lot of photos but someone told me I have to get permission from people in writing if I want to include a picture of a person on my site. I didn't think it was a big deal if I didn't but then again it only takes one.

I think it depends on where the picture was taken. It's always nice to have a model release, but if the pic was taken in a public place it might be ok. (vs if you took a pic of them in their back yard.)

That's true on where the picture was taken. Like in a city street.

The biggest issue is the nature of site -- commercial vs non-commercial
