I am a newbie on this forum. I am looking for information on utilizing Phone Home found on the Digital Point site. I have downloaded and established the link. How do I test or access the locator/picture?

Because originally I built it for myself and I don't have any Windows machines. :)

Hi, just need help changing my MAC Address. For some reason, it populated the wrong MAC Address and the locator is saying i'm in Colorado, but i'm actually in Texas. I tried to change this but couldn't figure out how. Is my MAC Address something I can edit? I double checked, and the MAC Address Phone Home came up with is not mine... Thanks for any help!

The MAC address is hardcoded and specific to your computer. Are you *sure* it's not yours?

Edit: I think it's got your right MAC address, just possible your ISP has registered the IP you use to the wrong location. The IP you just made that post from shows as being in Colorado too.

Hey Shawn. Thanks for the fast reply! So, i'm at a starbuck's right now, down the street from my apartment. Could that have anything to do with it? Also, I read online that my MAC address is listed as my ethernet id in my network settings. My ethernet id doesn't match the MAC address that phone home has listed for me. That's why I was thinking Phone Home got it wrong somehow. In anycase, is there a way to fix this? This is a really cool program and i'd like to be able to use it. Thanks!

Your computer has multiple MAC addresses... different one for ethernet, different one for wireless card, different one for Firewire ports (if you have any), etc.

If you are at a Starbucks, that's probably the issue, they probably all route traffic through a central hub (I would suspect Colorado).

So I should probably just uninstall phone home and try re-installing from home?

You don't need to uninstall/reinstall. If you move to a different location, the system will automatically log the new location for you. That's the whole point of it. :)

Oh, haha, I guess that's kind of obvious. so if someone steels my computer, i can track him as long as he isn't at a starbucks! that's cool, i'm a patient guy. I can wait till he returns home. :) Very cool software though! I do feel safer now. Always dreaded losing all my files/client work. Thanks again for your super swift response. Kudos man.

You could probably track them to a specific Starbucks if it was stolen since law enforcement could subpoena the upstream provider for the information. Although I doubt they would still be there since it would take a few days to process a subpoena. So yeah... better chance to nab them when it logged them to a non-public IP.

Thanks man. You've been a lot of help. This software probably saves a lot of people a lot of heart ache. If you ever get any testimonials from people, you should definitely put them up on here. I'm sure it makes for some interesting stories. At the very least, get a facebook "like" feature so we can spread the word about this and help protect our mac-wielding friends! :)

Speaking of the Facebook Like button, does it annoy you that it doesn't work with Firefox? I spent a good part of the day implementing the like button in a site i'm working on, and after testing it found that when clicked in Firefox is just fires off an endless loop opening and closing a login window. Initially, it just blocks the pop-up, but if I then chose to allow pop-ups from your site, or mine, and then click the like button again, it gets stuck in this loop. Could look like a virus to the average site browser. Are you concerned about it at all? I'm trying to decide if I should keep it on my site. I'd really like to...

If you try to click the like button browsing with firefox that isn't preset to allow cookies from your site, like if you're a new visitor, you should run into this problem. I guess it's a security thing. something about firefox and 3rd party cookies. Can read more about it if you google "Firefox and Facebook Like Button Problem". Apparently there's no solution at this time. bummer.
