Using other TLDs worth it?

I am workin on a project where site brand is very important aspect for the success. For last couple of months, I have been searching for good brandable domain name with a reasonable budget.

But after months of search, I am just getting fed up and now thinking of using other TLD (.fm etc) as an alternative...getting .com has just become impossible :(

Will it be worth taking an "excellent" brandable domain on other TLDs than using some crap.com?

Other extensions work well .org is heavily advertised in the US

As the internet evolves semantic meaning between the domain and the TLD will be increasingly important. eg. google.org their charitable foundation.

.info works well too for many types of sites especially ones that don't naturally fit the .org niche too well.

ccTLDs and pseudo ccTLDs like .fm .ws .cc etc you need to be careful how the search engines consider them for geo targetting, But if the .fm has real meaning (not only makes sense but also seems logical/natural to someone who knows nothing about your site) then that may be worth considering.

The other thing to consider when branding outside the .com name space is to make the extension part of the brand. So the logo, site design etc all incorporate the tld. One way to do this in the logo is use a different colour for the tld eg. british.info
