Using multiple H tags in first line of text on a page

I have seen many large sites putting there number 1 and 2 keywords in H1 and H2 tags on the very top of the page or in the banner. I am trying this right now and am wondering if it is bad to have:

    <h1>Keyword 1</h1> | <h2>Keyword 2</h2> | <h3>Keyword 4</h3> | <h2>Keyword 3</h2>
    Code (markup):
Without any text in between the H tags? I use CSS to put them in one row on the top of my pages. Would this be better?

    <h1>Keyword 1</h1> | <strong>Keyword 3</strong> | <h2>Keyword 2</h2> | <strong>Keyword 4</strong>
    Code (markup):
I changed it to the second version until I know if the first is bad or not.

    Thanks in advance.

If you're going to have keywords site-wide (on every page) be sure they're links back to a relevant page rather than just Headers. If you're just repeating your top keywords on each page, with no link back to the relevant page, then you're going to cannibalize your keywords.

If you're only doing this one on each page, why not consider something that can be just as effective and still helpful to users, such as a breadcrumb trail? Re-inforces your navigation and allows you to place relevant internal links and keywords in a way users (and Google) appreciate.

Thanks for the tips. The arcade script I am using puts bread crumb links on the game pages by default but I removed it because long game names screwed up my layout. Also was thinking of linking the heading tags but I thought google didn't like H1 and H2 tags hyper linked. If that is ok by Google then I will turn it into a H1-H3 bread crumb.

Hyperlinking is more for passing value/relevance from one page to another within your site. If you can say more specifically what you're trying to achieve through keyword placement, I could give you better reccomendations. Feel free to PM me if you like.

If you look here on the top right just above the ad are my keywords. 2 of the 4 I have set up in an H1 and H2 tag. These are the first words on my pages. I am trying to rank my homepage higher in the SERPs for those keywords. I don't want to do anything that might hurt my rankings or get me banned.

Do you have any ideas on how to do this better?

I don't think the SE's would penalize you for this, but I'd un-hyperlink "Fun Games". On-page elements look fine from a SEO perspective.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it. that hyperlink is actually ContextLink advertising. So I can't really remove it.

    Ah, didn't notice that :p

Don't get too worried about your on-page stuff. It needs to be good, but it's only the foundation of your SEO. On-page gets you to the starting line, off-page is the race itself ;)
