Meta keywords are a waste of time and have zero effect on search rankings.

meta description can effect your CTR

either write a good, unique meta desc, or leave it blank and let google snippet for you.

Meta descriptions are useful. They won't increase anything but possible CTR (as said above)

But kind of depends on your site. One of my sites I had to have a meta description of it because the search engines spidered the navigation and the first content they found to put on the results page. This is not what I wanted so adding a meta description tag cleaned it up in the results page instead of the jibberish that was there before.

I believe the Meta Keywords tag can be useful for optimizing your site both for external and internal search.

Many if not most sites these days have an internal search engine. And many of these internal search engines can use the Meta Keywords tag as a source of content for making search results more meaningful to the searcher.

META KEYWORDS is yet another meta tag important for the SEO of your web pages. However it is much less important than TITLE and META DESCRIPTION. Google has been ignoring META KEYWORDS from the very beginning and Yahoo has announced in Oct/2009 that it is dropping support for META KEYWORDS although after that they said that they are still using it but give it a very low priority . There are still several smaller search engines like bing, Inktomi and Teoma that use this tag when matching user searches against indexed content. Also this meta tag is used by some proprietary web spiders which use META KEYWORDS while scraping the web page data.

This means that even though META KEYWORDS does not have a very high weight in web page ranking it is still a good idea to put that tag in each web page and place some relevant keywords there. Be warned that you should not duplicate the same keyword many times since it could cause the search engine to ignore the whole META KEYWORDS tag.

I think that for an SEO value, meta descriptions are pretty much a waste of time but they do help your web users identify your site a little better. For example, I run searchforitlocal, a local web directory. Each page (over 80 million pages) has a unique meta description so when a search engine displays one of my pages as a result, they will use my meta description to describe what the sitepage is about giving the user a more informed reason to click the link and visit my site.

So for a small site or a site that has the same meta description for each page, don't bother wasting even a minute to improve on it. If your site is extremely large, like mine, then yes, try to be unique for users.

Title and meta description are the most important things, but there is no harm in doing your meta keywords properly as well.
