The answer depends actually on if you;re using regular wordpress that you;ve downloaded from wordpress.org and host yourself or host this on wordpress.com. If it's your own install, you can do whatever you choose but I;ve got to admit that chances are 1) you;re going to piss off your visitors when they see the incorrect tagging, especially if they've come looking for something and 2) you'll dilute any page rank from those pages. If it's a wp.com blog, last time I knew, anything over 12 tags is considered excessive and in fact may lead to have the site TOS'ed. At the very least the post in question will not show up in their sitewide tagging system. Hope this helps, -drmike
If you create couple hundred tags as you say in wordpress then they will lead to 404 (page not found's) which is detrimental to your ranking efforts. If you have the content and you still assign lot of different tags to the same content, then you are playing with duplicate content penalty. The link value of most of the tags will be ignroed at best.
