I know nothing about PHP and setting up an ecommerce site...can someone tell me...can you use Joomla and Magento together on one site?

Yes you can use both of them together as a combination of CMS + Ecommerce website.
But in my case i would rather go for Magento + Wordpress, both are extremely feature rich and seo friendly.

Thank you Oranges! My next question is...can Magento be used on a free hosting site such as 000webhost or would it be best to pay for hosting right away? I'd prefer not to at first because I have 9 new URL's/stores I'd like to set up and I'd prefer not to spend a lot of money until I'm making some first... Obviously I want it to look professional though. I only have very slight exprience writing my own HTML code years ago for an old online magazine I used to edit...www.heatcityreview.com... (not selling anything...I want nothing to do with the mag now...) It's just an example of my limits...I have NO PHP experience or even website editor experience...

You won't be able to run Magento in that sort of environment but I certainly agree with the above poster about using WP with it. Joomla has no business being on the same machine as magento for a wide range of reasons. Mostly security related.

    hope that helps,

It depends on how many products you have. I have run a few tests with magento on my test server. Its a 19 dollar a month shared environment and it runs just fine.

There are also well documented ways to speed that stuff up. That bit seems to escape most folks.

You will occasionally have to have the host flip something on for you but Magento does not do anything too crazy other applications do.

To see if you can install it on your current server you can upload this to your server and then browse to it.
