Not sure, but would also be interested in the answer. I've contemplated using an iframe before but have avoided them thus far.

iFrames are the same as Frames as far as SEO goes. If you go to http://www.norcalcars.com/SubmitAReview.asp. Which is one of my sites that uses iframes, look at the source. you see the call to the iframe src. This is what the search engine spiders see. they do not call the url they only view it in the source.

So what ever is on the page that gets called is not seen by the search engine spider.

In this case, I don't care that the spiders can't see the called page, the text that I want the spiders to see is outside of the iframe

Frames are not SEO Friendly, they are not crawlable by SE robots...

Yes, Google will index the pages , but everything after that gets tricky which is why I dont bother with them. Somewhere you need to have links that point directory to the iframe pages...maybe the sitemap?

Hopefully someone else will respond and give good examples.

Actually NIkkiBlue is right, The search engines will index the page within the iframe, just not as part of the calling page, it is indexed as a separate page. So it does no good for the iframe page as far as SEO goes.

The problem is pages called like this normally do not have the navigation and other features of the calling site. So if the page does show up in the serps and someone clicks on it, it will not benefit the site, unless there is some navigation on the page that directs them into the site.

Yeah. Frames are definitely not recommended in SEO. You can try DIV instead.

Short answer to a complex question -- don't use (i)frames, they are not SEO / validity or user friendly, there is no need to use them, so don't! (IMHO)
