Using Google Webmaster Central to get your crawl date

Google's webmaster central does a good job of answering most submission and indexing issues as well as telling you what searches found your pages. I like it a lot. A server issue accidentally told me when Google crawled my site.

I was having a problem last week with my server. Every time that I uploaded a file it returned a zero file size. It took a couple of days to get fixed. Apparently googlebot came through. Yesterday I found two errors. One stated that my index page had failed verification. I had previously verified it. I was curious about why it had failed. After re-Verifying the site I checked the 404s. One of my site subindex page showed not found with a message saying that google had crawled the site on 5/23/2007.

It occurred to me that I could just put a link to http://mysite.com/crawl-error.html at the bottom of my home page and generate a 404 error when google crawls. This will work for now since I can't find a good log analyzer that will work with my account. Any suggestions on where to get one?
