Hello Every1 I have a domain reg at godaddy and i'm using google apps for email for that domain. Now I want to host that domain somewhere else (lets say dream host) what do I need to change in DNS management (at godaddy) to achieve this? I don't to touch my email settings at Godaddy. I know I have one option of just changing NS to new host and edit MX records there for email (but email is quite important here so don't want to touch it) Can someone please help me with this?
No, you only change the MX records if you are trying to change the email host. Just change your settings in the NS you will be fine, as long as you don't touch your MX records you will be 100% fine. Your MX Records should be the one pointing to the Google Apps servers Your NS Records should be the one pointing to your web host. This is an example of a domain hosted on DreamHost and using Google Apps See what's using MX and what's using NS?
This is why don't touch NS records , See the above example . The NS records as follows, --------- NS ns1.dreamhost.com. NS ns2.dreamhost.com. NS ns3.dreamhost.com. -------- And you only need to point MX records to goole as follws, ------------- mail MX 10 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. mail MX 20 ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. mail MX 20 ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. mail MX 30 ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. mail MX 30 ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. mail MX 30 ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. mail MX 30 ASPMX5.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. mail CNAME ghs.google.com. -------- So only change MX records and not change NS records
...are you serious? He is trying to change the host not the mail server. So in order to change ONLY the host, which one does he need to change? He clearly told us that EMAIL is important so he CAN NOT risk breaking it.( Why else does one use a third-party mail server? So we don't have to worry about it!) omg...seriously
Ok I understand . - What he need is his DNS is in godaday - He is using gmail service - He need to point domain in some another server For this, 1) He no need to change name servers, as he staying in godady with DNS servers 2) He already have gmail for MX records , if not he can add the above rules in his DNS in godaday 3) To pointing his domain t o dream host he only need to point the "A" record to Dream host Hope it clear
