Using domain names with hyphens

    p.s. I have one domain which I registered year ago when started to learn SEO and all I can say is that domain (30 000 exact monthly searches and 130 000 competing sites) went to number 1 in big G in notime. All I did was some basic linkwheels on web 2.0 properties (actualy it was more like whitehat SEO ;)), some social bookmarking and posted 25-30 quality articles. In my opinion it was all about keyword (word-word). For now this is my only experience with hyphens.

    I do not think search engines can discriminate against the domain names with hyphen. However what is often seen that the domain names having hyphen post not so serious content and hence the end users do not like them much. Also it is difficult to type such name. If you are planning for a serious website you can go for it.

    In my experience, it is better to have the keywords you are targeting in your domain, so if you have to use a hyphen, go for it. I would use those as a last resort though, usually there is some form of a domain name you can find for exact match.
