I am assisting someone now who was sued for having a domain name with a trademarked term.

    I would advise against it.

Well, it's possible in the sense that you can easily go and do it. It's not recommended in the sense that the trademark holder MAY have a legitimate right over the domain name and might attempt to take it from you.

Names can never be copyright . Yet they could be trademarks .

If your name is sony then you can have sony-site ....
In most cases if you are supporting a product the companies don't have any problem but if you have porn site then that could put you in problem .

No, it's trademark infringement. Featuring their product doesn't give you any legal right to use their mark in a domain unless you have obtained permission (99% of the time they won't give it).

    Completely incorrect.

Big companies like Sony, Microsoft, etc. have there names trademarked.

Even if you are supporting their product they can argue that you used the name in bad faith and the site is "confusingly similar" to Sony's.

I would advice against registering such a name. It's not worth the fight in court (and I doubt anyone has the money to hire lawyers like these big companies).

You will most likely have to give up the name anyway.

There are millions of available names . . .don't mess it up getting a TMed one.
