I've run into an interesting 'issue' with Google Adwords and am hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the matter. I am running an Adword campaign for one of my clients and they have a number of targeted keywords targeting local towns. I have set the keywords up like so: builders chelmsford builders braintree etc... When I search for these phrases in Google the advert is present - however if I search for these phrases: builders in chelmsford builders in braintree the adverts do not appear. Do I need to take into consideration every possible conjunction and preposition word (in, of, or, and etc...) when creating my keyword list? Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
Your ads may not appear for various reasons. I assume you are using broad matches. I believe using phrase and exact matches are better. If people search on "builders in chelmsford", use the phrase and exact match types. The "standard" broad match type does not work exactly the way most people think. They get expanded, to use Google's term. They now have a new broad match type called broad match modifier. It works the way most people think, that is, each word must be present somewhere in the search term. I call it positive broad match because you add a + sign in front of your words such as: +builders +chelmsford But use phrase and exact matches too. You want more of your ads to trigger on those types, not broad.
Thanks for this - I will review the keywords and make recommendations as above. It's interesting because some of the keywords bring up results if I search for them and add the word "in" between them and others don't. I imported all the keywords via the Windows Adword Editor so would have thought all the keywords would act the same. I'll experiment and post my findings.
