Using AIM Profiles to promote websites?

Does anyone have any experience with this? Does it work well? What do you think of this idea?

If you put a link to my site in your AIM profile then you would be elgible to win a prize. i.e. anyone participating would post their screen name in a forum thread and then every week I would randomly select a screen name from the list to win a prize. And this could last all year long and you could maybe even win more then once? (please tell me if thats a horrible idea)

Im not sure if youve ever been to any advertising conferences like AdTech but sometimes exhibitors will give attendees t-shirts to wear with the incentive that at a certain time, they will look for users who are wearing their shirts and select one of those people at random and they will win a prize.

So what I'm saying is if a member puts a link to my website is his AIM profile (blog, myspace, xanga, whatever are possibilities as well) and on a certain date I will pull a screen name randomly from the list and then check to see if that person still has the link in his AIM profile, if he does, then he wins the prize, if not- I pull another screen name.

    Thanks,
    -Chris

I assume you would only pull the prize winner from the list of people online at a random time? Otherwise they'd just add it to a new screenname that is never online.

don't know if this will really drive a lot of traffic to your site, and how much would the prize cost you? It's all about the end cost of getting that click..how much do you figure it'll be?

Won't work, but you could create an AIM virus that changes their profiles. It's been done once or twice, but worked really well.
