Using a Hosting company for backlinks...

    I have a contact in a medium-sized hosting company.

The same contact does SEO as a side business.

This surely means free backlinks to hundreds of sites? ( and I am not talking about anything unethical here)

    Opinions / Views ?

It sounds like you are implying that this contact will place backlinks on all the sites hosted by the company with out them knowing. That would unethical. What are you talking about if not that?

yeah if the guy places links on the websites he is hosting without the customers knowing that would annoy all his customers, best thing to do with SEO is to do it yourself, cut out the middleman, do it yourself buy links from webmaster here at DP and the money your paying the middleman you can spend on links your self :D

Unless each website is hosted on an individual IP I don't think all these backlinks would look too good. (correct me if Im wrong)

Something is definitely fishy about that service and I wouldn't recommend it.

Actually google and the other search engines don't care if two sites from the same ip but different hostnames give you a backlink as far as I know it treats them as if they had different IP addresses.

Yes, reading over my post again that it could easily be construed that way...No, the guy seems very upfront with his customers and if their is mutual benifit his client sites, I think he kind of "matchmakes" for links!...Thats what I am trying to find out here...do hosting companies have access to thousands of backlinks?

if he is sneeking them in without the site owners permission then i as a site owner would take legal action against the host company and the seller. thats classed as industrial espionage. especially if someone is engaged in seo for their site and then unknown to them a sly link is added, thats like stealing

Maybe if they make a deal that his site will be uploaded to the many other sites being hosted on that company.

That surely not good idea, one major penalty there is manipulation. Also getting great amount of backlinks in short period of time is totally suspicious to Google, usually ending up being banned.
