ok so lets say im making a blog about "how to plant trees" and im ranked number 2 on google for that term, but now I want to target "how to grow trees in clay" but I do not want to lose my number 2 spot for the first term. I want to target say 5-10 keyword phrases per niche blog, so would I just make sure the keyword density stays the same? For instance if my first post about "how to plant trees" had 10% of that keyword phrase in it would I just keep that at 10% when I add new content and be ok? I mean is there a way to do this? I hope you guys know what im talking about, thanks
Targeting too many keywords/phrases can be a problem. You should focus on no more than 3 key phrases per page in my opinion. Keep this in mind when you're writing your content.
Every word in your content can be a keywords but I target two main keywords for my blog and uses those targeted keywords as anchor text.
so you guys think it wouldnt not be wise to target more than 2 keyword phrases? Do they search the indivudual blog post or the whole blog site?
Have 2/3 "main" keywords per page and optimise for these. Then put the other "secondary" keywords in your content as well (but don't add these to your page title or start keyword stuffing). Otherwise you'll dilute the effectiveness of your main keywords.
This is what I do with my blog. I try to rank first for only two keywords (trying to get backlinks and always using them in my blogs), and besides, I try to use as many long tail keywords as I can per post, for me it works great, because despite some long tail keywords do not bring more than 2 or 3 referrals, when you have lots of posts already in your archive, you end up receiving tons of referrals.
