Could anyone tell me if I use a 301 redirect on a domain whether the search engines then view all of the backlinks that that domain has as pointing to the new domain? Would the new domain then get the same PR too? Thanks.
In my experience, yes the backlinks and PR are transferred, it just takes a little time. I recently did a 301 on one of my pages, and for a time, both the old and new pages appeared in the Google index, over time (about a month) the old page vanished and the new page inherited the rankings, but it wasn't until the last PR update that the PR was transferred. Raz2133 summed it up pretty well. The new URL assumes the identity of the old URL. If you want to do any 301 Redirects, now is a good time to do it. Google's semi-random schedule says PR update is in approx 2 months, considering their PR snapshot date is 3-4 weeks before the toolbar export there's around 5 weeks before the PR values are "set" for URL's. So doing your redirect now will ensure everything migrated over for the snapshot.
if you use 301 redirect , everythink (your backlinks and your page rank) will be transfered to the new site
