Using 2 computers on 1 monitor

I don't know if it's common knowledge or not, but I never realized that you could use a monitor's digital AND analog inputs to run 2 computers. I've got my main PC running via digital, and my crappy old box running via analog. No need for 2 monitors anymore - I can just switch them over by pressing a few keys on the monitor :D

Not exactly the newest trick in the box, but I totally agree it is awesome. I used to do this before getting a decent KVM so all I need now is one monitor, one keyboard, and one mouse :D. Makes me feel like a total geek though.

Well I'm not exactly the shapest knife in the drawer :)
I've just got my old computer back that I gave away to my mum years ago, not even she wants it anymore :p and was just trying to find an immediate way to use both PCs at one. I'll eventually end up using VNC instead of stuffing around with my monitor or a KVM switch.

I dont see how this can work. So is one of the computers just for extra storage space?

My 'new' old system only has a 3GB drive and an 8GB drive! :p

I'm going to use my old pc when I don't want to tie up my main computer with stuff like encoding DVDs/CDs etc.

KVM is a waste of money in my situation.
I've installed UltraVNC and it's all working nicely now. I can view both computers on my monitor at once, no probs.

KVM = keyboard, video monitor and mouse switch. So you can use 1 keyboard and monitor on multiple computers.

I'm using VNC instead. It's free and pretty simple to setup.

I guess I could even put my old PC on my wifi network and hide it away in a closet or something.

I got a KVM switch from eBay about a year ago and love it.
Installation is easy. Just plug it in and restart your computers.
No software is installed or needed, unlike VNC.

I use one pc for everyday use. (e.g. edit graphics, watch movies, browse net, etc.)
The other pc is used as a home web server and extra storage.
