I want to make a dance themed website with just a bunch of user generated videos of people dancing. Can I use videos that people uploaded to Youtube of them selfs dancing? I'm not talking about official music videos or anything, just people videotaping them selfs and then uploading it. Is there a difference between embedding the video and anything else? I assume it's ok, as they have the "embed video" code right there for you, but I wanted to check here first.
If you embed the videos with the code provided by YouTube then it is perfectly legal. User that upload videos grant permission to have the videos embedded when they upload them to YouTube.
Sweet! Thanks man, I was just expecting bad news because that's all I've gotten in this forum so far Not bad answers, but bad news, everyone was correct in the answers they've given me, just not what I wanted to hear at the time. Thanks again for the quick response.
No problem. I would just stay away from the videos that are blatantly infringing (like clips from dancing with the stars). User generated videos though are fair game.
And I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to this one, but music vidoes? Do any artists explicitly give consent to have them published elsewhere?
Most I would say no. Furthermore, most artists don't own the copyright to their music videos. Heck, most of them don't even own the copyright to their own music these days.
we have several wordpress blogs that utilize embedded youtube videos. one of them is about drumming and there is a travis braker embed- he obviously made the video and uploaded it, so it is all good. make sure to have an easy way to contact you if you are posting a lot of videos. this way you can take down any videos that you receive complaints about. good luck!
